I am a Reading Intervention Specialist from the UK. I have taught as a classroom teacher, SENCo,
Learning support and one-one intensive intervention with students with dyslexia in the UK, The
Bahamas and New Zealand. I have been teaching the Wilson Reading System, in the Cayman Islands for
the past 20 years in both Private and Government schools.
The Wilson Reading System is an evidence-based, instructional intervention programme used to teach
struggling readers, especially those who have a language-based learning difficulty such as dyslexia. It is
one of several programmes that has its roots in the highly structured Orton-Gillingham approach. It
provides a systematic and cumulative structure. The lessons are interactive and present information in
small steps to make learning easier and faster alongside developing confidence.
Developing students’ confidence has always played a huge part in my approach not only in providing
extrinsic acknowledgements and rewards but by identifying every small gain and achievement together
with each student to develop their own motivation, persistence and ultimately, success.
With a calm and supportive manner, I am committed to providing each student with a ladder of
successful learning experiences where they feel comfortable yet encouraged to strive to be the best
they can be.
